Liverpool and Manchester United’s owners do not love their clubs and view their affairs as ‘only business’ amid the furore to the collapse of the controversial Super League.
That’s according to Newcastle United life president and former chairman Sir John Hall, who insists their John W Henry and the Glazer family’s motives are purely financial and not out of a passion for the team or love of the English game.

The aforementioned duo, as well as Arsenal, Chelsea, Man City and Tottenham all signed up to join the breakaway league last Sunday.
But after a spectacular backlash to the news within football, all six clubs pulled out of the radical proposals just 48 hours later.
And Hall – like the vast majority of people in football – was firmly against the prospect of this type of new competition being formed.
He told talkSPORT host Jim White on Thursday: “I was very angry at them doing this. Looking after themselves and no-one else.

“I suppose if you step back from it – these people are quite shrewd – it hasn’t just happened now, it’s been happening for some time.
“I suppose the virus has accelerated the pressure on them to get a super league [going] to protect themselves.”
All six clubs have since issued apologised for their actions, most notably Liverpool owner John W Henry who said in a video message he had ‘let fans down’.
But Hall insists the view that mega rich owners form a personal attachment to the football clubs they run is simply not accurate.
Quizzed by Jim White over whether the likes of Henry and co ‘love their clubs’, he said: “No, no – it’s a business – that’s what they came in.
“They came in because they could see how they could make money.
“I think the Americans came in years and years ago into the clubs and they had a vision for soccer beyond what we in the UK had thought about.
“They were looking at the clubs like a global brand. I believe it’s always been their intention in terms of what they put on the table at this moment.”

“And you’ve got to ask the question if they had got the Super League over the line then where does it stop?
“Next they’d be agreeing among themselves on players and how much they’re going to pay.
“The fans did the right thing rising up and stopping this [from happening].”

Hall’s comments come after a rollercoaster week for football, which has culminated in fans staging protests against their ownership up and down the country.
