Izotope Ozone Winamp

Izotope Ozone Winamp

Keeper of the Quotes

I used to run the Izotope Ozone plugin on Winamp back in the day and it was the single best thing that improved my music listening experience. I haven't used Winamp for about a decade and am now running the Edifier R1850DB without a sub for my desktop speaker setup. Music listening is through Spotify.

Izotope Ozone is a digital signal processing plug-in. It has a Winamp plug-in version that claims to be able to make music sound 'warm, deep, full...like a classic tube hi-fi system' (from the frequently asked questions in the help system). Audio&Me referenced this product in his Hi-Fi PC Sound Guide. It also has a mode that claims to make headphones sound more speaker-like.
I'm always interested in new DSP products, especially those which claim to be able to make headphones sound more speaker-like. In that vein I've reviewed QSound's iQfx and Sensaura's Jamma. At the time of review, they were pretty awful. The only spatializing DSP software product that I respect is Dolby Headphone, which plugs into several software DVD players. It used to plug into Real JukeBox as a product that was called 'Personal Listening Space.' Unfortunately, that doesn't seem to be made anymore. Dolby Headphone actually makes music sound better over headphones.
Anyway, I downloaded the free version of Ozone and installed it. The only difference between it and the reigstered version is that the registered version is more customizable; the algorithms are the same between the two.
To put it simply, Ozone disappointed me. It's not nearly as bad as iQfx or Jamma, but that's not saying much. The problem with its equalization modes is that it makes the music sound extremely artificial. Yes, the music can sound more spacious or warmer -- but at the cost of creating a very noticeable and irritating distortion in tonality. One knows instantly when this plug-in is being used, because voices and instruments sound quite synthetic. You can pick from a number of presets, each which warps the music in its own special way . Also, be wary of comparisons: turning the plug-in on increases the volume which of course can make you think that plug-in is better than it is.
By the way, the 'headphone' mode just makes the music sounds recessed and distant. If you want to see this done right, again, try using a Dolby Headphone plug-in.
Not recommended.
